  5. Ancient Egyptians and River Nile

Survival of Ancient Egypt depended entirely on River Nile. There was very little rainfall in Egypt. Every year heavy rains and melting snow in Ethiopian mountains caused the River Nile to flood downstream in Egypt. When the floods recede they left behind thick rich mud which was perfect for planting seeds to grow food.
The Ancient Egyptians called the rich black soil from the floods the "Gift of the Nile". The Ancient Egyptians believed that the flood was caused by the tears of the goddess Isis as she cried for her dead husband Osiris.

The Ancient Egyptians called the Nile the "Aur", which means "black" and comes from the black soil.

The Egyptians measured the height of the annual flood using a Nilometer. This helped them to determine how good the crops would be that year.

The three most important crops were wheat, flax, and papyrus.

    • Wheat - Wheat was the main staple food of the Egyptians. They used it to make bread. They also sold a lot of their wheat throughout the Middle East helping the Egyptians to become rich.

    • Flax - Flax was used to make linen cloth for clothing. This was the main type of cloth used by the Egyptians.

    • Papyrus - Papyrus was a plant that grew along the shores of the Nile. The Ancient Egyptians found many uses for this plant including paper, baskets, rope, and sandals.

River Nile was a source of food for Ancient Egyptians. They caught fish suing spears and birds that flew near the river were caught using nets.

For Ancient Egyptians travelling across their country was difficult as it was mostly desert. So the River Nile became the best way for Egyptians to go from one place another. Also the River Nile was used to transport goods such as food, livestock and more importantly materials for building the magnificent monuments such as the world famous Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza near Cairo.

Most of Ancient Egypt’s historical sites are located along the banks of the Nile River including cities such as Luxor and Cairo.

Some general facts about River Nile

The river Nile is the longest river in the world and is approximately 6,695 kilometres (4,160 miles). It flows through Burundi, Egypt, Ethiopia, Uganda and Sudan. It has two major tributaries which are the White Nile and the Blue Nile which meet in Sudan. The White Nile is much longer than the Blue Nile however the White Nile
only covers 15% of the Nile and the Blue Nile covers 85% of the Nile.

The source (the beginning) of the river is in Burundi and the mouth (the end) is from Egypt into the Mediterranean Sea. The largest source of the Nile is Lake Victoria. It’s average discharge is 3.1 million litres (680,000 gallons) per second.
The Nile Delta in Northern Egypt is where the Nile River drains in to the Mediterranean Sea. It is around 160 kilometres (100 miles) in length and spreads out over 240 kilometres (149 miles) of coastline. Around 40 million people (half of Egypt’s population) live in the Nile Delta region.

In 1787, the famous Rosetta stone was found in the Nile Delta in the city of Rosetta. This Ancient Egyptian artefact played a key role in modern understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphics.

The Aswan High Dam was built in 1970 to help regulate flooding of the Nile River. Before the Aswan Dam was built, years that featured high levels of water could wipe out crops while years of low level water could produce famines and drought. The dam helps control these water levels.
