Scientists have found that we use the same part of our brains to recognise emoticons (the smiley icons you sometimes see in text messages) and real faces.
However, this is only true if the emoticon is read from left-to-right, as with all other words on a page.
This is because humans have learned to read the tiny pictures in a particular way.
- When are you more likely to use emoticons in your writing?
- Do you often use emoticons? Why / why not?
- Why is it important to make sure that what we say and write is always easy to understand?
Let me know what you think!
Remember: a blog post should be a well thought out paragraph, including careful sentences!
I look forward to seeing your entries (online or on paper) by Wednesday 19th March!
I some time's use my mum's telephon and i write to my cousen by useing faces because he is small and my older one use's faces like that ( how r u :} )
ReplyDeleteSo the smiley faces help your younger cousin to understand? I wonder what other symbols you could use instead of words to help someone understand what you are writing.
Delete1.I use emoticons when i text my friends in Facebook.
ReplyDelete2.I use emoticons because so i can tell my feelings like happy faces.
3.If you put your words they wont understand so we put emoticons so they will
understand your exact feelings.
You are more likely to use emoticons in a text message or an email where they are available. For example in a text message, you might say "the weather is amazing today" and add a :) at the end. Computers and phones nowadays have a whole variety of emoticons. Emoticons help the reader understand the message more. A wink emoticon ;) can be used when making a joke.
ReplyDeleteI do not use emoticons very often as I do not have a mobile phone or email account. Sometimes I send messages on my mum's phone and include
emoticons.
It is important to make sure that what we say and write is always easy to understand so that the message being sent is understood correctly. Messages help with communication and if what we say or write is not clear then it will take longer to get things done.
Sorry Kate I accidentally deleted your post. Here it is:
ReplyDeleteYou use emoticons in your writing to show how you are feeling using a picture. This is easier and quicker than using words. I don't use emoticons because I don't text or email to contact people. It is important to make sure what we write is easy to understand so that people know what we are saying to them.

I normally use emoticons when replying to teacher comments e.g. if I was happy with what the teacher says I would use this icon.
ReplyDeleteI use emoticons when I send my blog post to Miss Cleary or text my family. I do it because I think it is friendlier to use the icons and I can communicate my feelings more effectively.
You should make sure what you say and write is easy to understand so that other people can make sense of what you are trying to say.
:) this emoticon conveys a happy person. :( this emoticon conveys a sad person or feeling.
ReplyDeleteemoticons represent a feeling or an emotion. You can use emoticons when you are texting on your mobile phone and on your email.
Emoticons are a quick way to show people how you feel inside or about something.
However emoticons can also be misunderstood and cause problems.
I do not use emoticons because I am to young to use texts and email.
Emoticons
ReplyDeleteBy Ali Khan
You are more likely to use an emoticon in your writing when it is a characters emotions and whether it is a happy emotion or a sad emotion. You can also use an emoticon in writing when you are being sarcastic and it’s easy to learn and hard to forget.
I don’t often but sometimes use emoticons when I blog so that I show I’m being sarcastic for example. Sometimes if there is no options of emoticons then you’ll have to make it with the keys.
It is important to make sure what we say and write is always easy to understand because sometimes people get the wrong idea e.g. this is the right way: you are mental ;)…..just joking, this is the wrong way: You are mental.
If you do not do the right way your friendship might break with one of your friends.
Everyone can fell emoticons in a text how ever you are writing to they might say you are sooo boring and put a face next to it so that means they are joking like my cosoin he text me a lot he says Gresa you are so crazy but i know he is joking all ready. If someone writes to you in a email it makes it easy for them to understand it may not be your voice but it is like the same thing. You use emoticons in your writing sometimes when you are writing a story you might say to the reader what they are felling.
ReplyDeleteI realy like yours Ali
ReplyDeleteOur brains 'read' emoticons like real faces
ReplyDeleteWhen are you more likely to use emoticons in your writing?
(1) Emoticons are used to communicate emotions in writing and are used widely text messages and online chatting.
Emoticons are icons to express feelings and moods in written text. Some basic examples of emoticon are:
:-( Sad face
:-) Happy face (simple Smiley)
:-|| Angry Face
There are 2 types of emoticons – Western and Eastern. The above are examples of Western style which written left to right.
In Eastern style the text is written vertical. Examples include:
(^o^) happy face
(‘_’) Sad face
Do you often use emoticons? Why / why not?
No. I do not have a mobile phone and I am not allowed to send text messages on my parents’ phones. Also I am not allowed to do online chatting.
Why is it important to make sure that what we say and write is always easy to understand?
To avoid confusion and misunderstanding is important to speak and write clearly. Poor communication can lead to arguments with friends and parents.
